NCStar Red/Green Dot Sight
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I bought an NCStar Red/Green Dot gun sight, designed for the paintball crowd, to use on my astronomical ETX-125EC telescope to sight in on stars. I used 3M VHB double-sided tape to fix the sight to the telescope. The sight is very rugged, made from aluminum, has a clear 25 mm diameter objective, weighs 132 grams, is 104 mm in length, has two different size dovetail settings, and comes in either black or silver. The resulting dot size is a nicely resolved disk approximately 5 arcminutes in diameter. The paintballers on the web reviews complained that the unit is often too dim for daytime use, so I took the chance that it might be fine for astronomy. The battery that comes with it is a 3Volt CR2032. When I got the sight I had to take the battery out and the electronics disk that it sits on to access 4 small screws to loosen the rheostat so that the unit more easily turns on/off and changes between red and green dot brightness settings. At 3 volts the dot is bright enough for daytime use, but I found if you leave the unit on for a day or so, the voltage drops to about 2.8 volts and then it is hard to see the dot in daytime but is just perfect for nighttime use. Subsequently, on the web I found that the discharge curve for CR2032 batteries quickly drops to ~2.8 volts but stays there for hundreds of hours! In any case, I think this particular gun sight makes a very good astronomical telescope finder, and pass along these comments for what they’re worth.
NcSTAR red dot sight
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Quality appears to be very good. Options include both red or green dot selection with just a twist of the main selector. I have not installed it yet on my Tippman X7 but it seems like it will fit well and be a nice addition to the tactical rifle look and provide quick target selection.
Sight for my 98 Custom
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I recently purchased a Tippmann 98 Custom Platinum Series paintball marker. The actual marker was great, though I wanted to add some “tactical flare” to it. I looked around for a while, and found this red dot sight by NcStar. At only $20, I decided to purchase it. When it arrived, I was pleasantly surprised at the build quality. It is all metal, and the dial in which you select the color/intensity of the dot was solid and smooth. The sight easily fit on top of my 98 custom, and looks like its an actual part of the marker. The two look great together. All in all, I am extremely satisfied with this purchase.
Small scope ideal for airsoft smaller guns and pistols.
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I bought this for a little more than $20 to put on my Tokyo Marui MP7. I did not want an expensive scope and I really liked the open-style design. You can sight moving opponeents more easily then squinting through a tube. In airsoft combat, this is important. You can sight through the scope and still see eveything around you. The scope is forgiving on less refined CQ combat technique, like mine!
The size is perfect for smaller SMG-style airsoft guns. Adjusting it was fairly simple. The feel and fit seems very high quality. They supply the hex wrench, extra battery and a nice lens cloth. Even the box was elegant. This is not German optics, however. It is made in P.R.C.
The dislikes are that the reticle is not bright enough for blazing sun light. I play airsoft at night so this is not an issue. The other minor problem is the weatherproof coatings on < $50 scopes do not tolerate tropical heat and humidity well. The coatings eventually start to melt and make a mess. Just don't leave it in a hot car. This particular coating is holdiong up o.k., much better than my B.S.A. did.
The scope is designed to be recoil-proof. The knob is difficult to twist when new. This is probably a testiment to its durability, a good thing.
I can’t really speak on its application for real guns. But for smaller airsoft guns, I love the scope. Its a nice example of form follow fucntion.
